We serve others

The word servant is not a word with which most of us are overly familiar.  Sure we have seen servants in movies and plays.  Sure we have read about them in the Bible.  But most of us have never met one.  Yet a servant is what we are supposed to be.

Even though in Jesus' day servants were looked down upon, Jesus still instructed his followers that servanthood was the model manner of life for God's people.  Servanthood was the model because it allowed believers to reflect back into the world the love that God had given to God's people.  Jesus modeled this servant life not only through his death on the cross, but also through moments such as his washing the disciples feet at the last supper.

You and I are called then by God to follow Jesus' lead.  We are to be servants.  Our PC(USA) Book of Order puts it this way:

"Those who follow Christ are to participate in God’s activity in the world by:

    (a) healing, reconciling and binding up wounds,

    (b) ministering to the needs of the poor, the sick, the lonely, and the powerless,

    (c) engaging in the struggle to free people from sin, fear, oppression, hunger, and injustice,

    (d) giving of our substance to the service of those who suffer,

    (e) sharing with Christ in the establishing of his just, peaceable, and loving rule in the world.

(G-3.0300)

The Church is called to undertake this mission even at the risk of losing its life, trusting in God alone as the author and giver of life, sharing the gospel, and doing those deeds in the world that point beyond themselves to the new reality in Christ."
