| Have
you ever been locked in a closet? Like a bird in a cage, unable to escape?
If so, do you remember the relief you felt when you were released? Maybe
you feel that way about your life. Your past and the guilt you associate
with it may be a prison that, try as you might, you just can’t escape. You’d
love to know the joy of being free from your past, yet people love to remind
you of your failures.
Many
of us discover early in life that others remember our mistakes and errant
choices more readily than the good things we accomplish and the hundreds
of times we do the “right thing.” Even those who love us the most, family
and friends, seem all too willing to hold a grudge and make us feel guilty
for some past mistake or error in judgment. Perhaps the strongest criticism
comes from the voice inside our heads, the voice that tells us we are beyond
forgiveness and without hope.
